Delighted to have a thriller/mystery headed by a vaulted lesbian protagonist. It felt as though the author was telling me her story - from both characters' points of view, softly speaking into my ear. That is the degree to which I connected with her as a reader. She drew my sympathies and loyalties to both Natalya and Alison, rooting for and against each of them at various times for the benefit of the other. I loved how flawed these two women were, lending authenticity to their makeup. This book was so well written, I will go back to the beginning and re-read it to catch the many subtleties I missed the first time in my rush to keep up with narrative's unfolding. What a fantastic author Lee Winter is - a jewel for the genre.
Warning: May contain spoilers. Lee Winter, you evil mastermind, what have you done to me? How do you come up with these ideas? What goes on in that brain of yours? My head is still reeling after having finished the book and I can’t focus on my everyday tasks because my mind is consumed with this book. I stayed up late into the morning hours to finish it and had a restless night tossing and turning. I can’t stop thinking about it. THIS BOOK. It’s like nothing I’d ever read before, not just plotwise. If anyone has ever read The Red Files, you’d know how well this author can write but she takes it a notch higher with Requiem for Immortals and does it so well, so beautifully, so poetically. Requiem/Natalya…I don’t even know where to begin with her. My review won’t do her character justice. You’ll just have to read the book yourselves to really feel who she is, to get into her mind, to know her thoughts, to understand why she does what she does and what’s made her who she is…this beautiful, thoroughly flawed yet perfect creature. As for Alison, I loved her character development throughout the book. I’ll admit, a part of me misses that older version of her in the parking lot under the rain the first time – the awkward, shy, unsure of herself Alison. It’s so endearing. This book will make you cry, it’ll make you laugh, it’ll make you gasp with the twists and turns in the plot you didn’t see coming, but more importantly it’ll make you FEEL all kinds of things (ahem, Requiem). There has only been one other book in this genre that’s made me feel this much at this magnitude. Requiem for Immortals just does something to you no other books will ever come close to doing. At least not for a while, for me at least. At the end there’s a list of the soundtracks used throughout the book. Look them up, close your eyes, and get lost in them. The music is so haunting you feel so stripped, so vulnerable. Before I end this review, I just have to mention the sex scene between the main characters. I was hoping to get a proper one, I really was. My curious brain wants to know the contrast between their first time and their next time. After seeing Natalya baring her soul to Alison at the end, I can’t help but wonder what their next time would be like. Would Natalya still want to be the one with all the power? Or would she finally allow someone else that? Yes, the rougher sex we got fit for what was going on at that time. Miss Winter, you have the power to make it happen. You did with Flashbang. I’d buy it. PLEASE ;)
I wish I could give this more stars~ As a writer, I can't imagine Ms. Winter's didn't need to de-compress after writing this since she clearly was deeply emotionally involved with their development, especially Requiem. The narrative is flawless and compelling! While it's written in third person, I felt each character was telling us their story from a first person POV. While Requiem is a dark character, I found the hints of her other side tantalizing and Alison's character oh so interesting. I highly recommend this novel and feel after reading several of Ms. Winter's books, she should attempt to break into the main stream for novels. I give it 7 Stars!
Loved the book, the story is great, LOVED the angst. Everything. Couldn’t put it down, I read it in two days considering that most of those 48 hours I spent working. You won’t be disappointed if you buy it or borrow it. Highly recommend it. I wish there would be more authors who would truly care for what they write, and Ms Winters really cares about what she puts out there for us to enjoy. Thank you.
I finished this book about a week ago and have been sitting with it trying to figure out how to explain how much and why I liked this book so much. It was everything I hoped for, a fantastic tense thriller with dark characters and sinister plotting. But it also had touching moments I wasn’t expecting and scenes that made me sympathize and even like characters that has me questioning my morality! After I finished this book I had to go to Spotify and find an Arvo Part playlist, which will accompany my next read through if this amazing, entertaining and nuanced story.
The characters are well written. The detail spent on crime families, police squads, and real families was impeccable. The musical tastes, descriptions, and movements are nothing short of perfection. Well done story while being risky as to not over give the reader too much sappiness to feel completely happy by book's end. Thrills, sexiness, and mystery are all encompassing in this masterful piece on contemporary fiction. Well played.
A hard core assassin, who plays concert quality Cello, travels the world with performances as her cover. She meets a young women who melts her hard heart. The book was great. It’s part of a series but works as a stand alone.
Beautifully written with such intriguing and complex characters. Highly unorthodox love story. I enjoyed it immensely. This is the first book I've read by Lee Winters and it will not be the last.
