Booklet 5 of van der Leek's growing series about Chris Watts' shocking and horrendous murder and disposal of the bodies of his pregnant wife and young daughters adds very little to what is contained in the the discovery documents previously released by the DA's office. Anyone who has read the documents and/or watched the videos of the investigation, will not find anything new in this book. You will know what evidence has not been found, if you have half a brain you will have observed that certain questions were not asked, leads were not followed up on. van der Leek continues his criticism of investigators for these supposed failings, but the fact that they had obtained a confession from Chris Watts and located and recovered the bodies of the victims within just over 48 hours is pretty remarkable and a result of quick and outstanding and interagency investigative work at all levels. Worse most distracting and annoying, the booklet shows some of the downsides of self-publishing and the author's narcissism: it clearly has not been edited, or even proof read by the author himself. It is replete with misspellings, missing words, colloquialisms, and sentences that just don't make sense or disappear...somewhere. Obviously van der Leek's goal was to get the book out as quickly as possible (he's now apparently on a self-imposed monthly publication schedule, with Booklet 6 due out...now!). To release such a poorly written product is just lazy, and greedy, in my opinion.

Bought and I was going to force myself to spread the reading out over a few days to prolong the enjoyment of the narrative, thinking it can't be as interesting as the other four. Last night I literally could not stop reading it and kept at it until 3 am. I didn't realize how late (or early) it was! Your analysis of the interrogation of Chris with Coder is so interesting! You hooked me again. Thanks to the author.

I have been a fan of the author’s work from his books on the Oscar Pistorius trial and on mass killer Henri van Breda. Van der Leek never fails to astonish me, as with this brilliant book in his series on the Chris Watts murders. But what astonishes is not the pacy words and the readability (that’s a given), it’s Van der Leek’s dedication to unravelling a mound of evidence, and his uncanny ability to do the sums, so as to slip deep inside the mind of a killer. If anyone is going to take us closer to the truth, here's the super-sleuth.

Having read all of the released discovery, I was anxiously awaiting the release of this book! I read it in about 2 hours and now I'm dying for the next installment. Nick, you have a fan and reader as long as you write because I really enjoy your perspective as a true crime rocket scientist. Amazing work!

I feel that much of these books were guessing. Seems !like you hopped on board to write them as soon as the crime was committed. At that point many things were not known. Many things I disagree with. But hey I'm not a professional either. Yet I would rather wait and read aboutfacts.

Excellent. Thought provoking of all American family murder. Nick Van Der Leek goes inside the mind of Watts and his transformation from meek father to a monster

This book was just so incredibly well done! To anyone that is interested in this case, this is vital reading. It walks you through the interrogation from many different perspectives. I found myself, as I tend to do with Nick’s books, reflecting on this case and gaining incredible new insight into what, when, where, how, and most importantly, why. If there are questions as to why this book isn’t released in hardcopy form, it really isn’t meant to be. The links provided by the author, (peppered through the book) when clicked on, invoke stronger understanding. Nick has such a brilliant mind and was born to do this! I’m ready to go back and start reading the other books in the series for the second time. I just can’t get enough! I’m hooked!

Drilling Through The Discovery is a detailed look into the days after the wife and kids go missing until their bodies are retrieved from the oil field. The author exposes Watts' psychology in a careful manner allowing the reader to realize Watts wasn't necessarily a narcissist or psychopath, he was a coward incapable of communication, incapable of confrontation, wanting to be seen as only a good guy. We're shown how those characteristics lead to the murders and then to his arrest as the detectives used his wanting to please and inability to stand up to authority qualities to their advantage leading to his half-truth confession.
