The repetitions in this book really bring it down. This book is very much in need of an editor since, like previous books, there are a lot of spelling errors, however the spelling errors are much easier to ignore than the repetition of huge blocks of text. I read some of the other reviews which spoke of this problem and said that this book was a beta version, but those reviews were from July and it is now the end of September and there seems to have been no update - unless said update was terribly inefficient. Also there was no info form the author that I could see claiming that this was a beta version - aside from my dislike of authors who actually do such a thing as publishing a book before it is finished, doing so without notice would be far worse. As I have just started reading the book I do not know how prevalent this problem is but the first two chapters almost made me stop reading it, and I actually love this series. I bought this book more than a month ago, decided to give it some time after I read the comments but now with the next book in the series out I thought that this book must have been updated by now.The second chapter is, almost in its entirety, a repetition of the first chapter... and the first and second chapter both repeat points already made, in the same chapter, several times. Both chapters end the same way so the second chapter actually goes back on the story-line and makes not just a repetition of back-ground information, which this series is famous for, but actually has the same plot as the first chapter. I was certain I had accidentally gone backwards on my kindle but no such luck, the book is simply this badly edited.The fact that I still give this book 3 stars speaks volumes about how much I liked the previous books. Even though all of the books in this series have had glaring spelling errors and some repetitions it has not been this prevalent before. I will actually most likely stop reading this book in the hope that I will go back to it at some point in the future and maybe it will be fixed by then... and I really hate not finishing a book that I have started.It really seems as if the author of these books rarely bothers to read over the entire work after he finishes, which would not be a problem as long as he managed to have someone competent do so for him, but that is not the case either.
I read and enjoyed the first seven books in the Spellmonger series. Despite the occasional spelling and grammar errors, those first seven books were a cut above the typical self-published ebooks available on Amazon. Because I read and enjoyed the first seven books in the series, I didn’t bother to read the reviews for book eight. That was a serious mistake.Book eight frankly reads like a first draft of a manuscript. There are major problems with the continuity. For example, events occurred in one chapter which made it appear as if the young duke of Alishar had just granted lands and titles of nobility to several warmagi. That’s a bit confusing because there had been no mention of this event occurring up to that time in the book. I was left with the impression that this had happened off stage somewhere. In a later chapter, however, we are presented with a scene in which the duke grants those titles and lands previously discussed to the same warmagi. That entire later chapter looks as if it has simply been inserted out of sequence into a manuscript.There are other times when events occurred in such a way that the major characters had to be aware of critical information but later acted as if they knew nothing about this. For example, there is one chapter in which the character of Pentandra is told by her husband about a new kind of undead that are posing a threat to humanity. This new kind of undead is intelligent, capable of using magic, and is faster and stronger than a normal human. Pentandra later acts as if she knew nothing about this and was learning of it for the first time.There are also events that are simply repeated. For example, Pentandra is attending an annual conference of magi when she learns of a goblin attack back home in Alshar. With many other magi, she rushes home to counter the threat. In order to get home quickly, she uses magic and arrives at an Alka Alon way point in a crypt. She rushes to the palace where she helps coordinate the response. As the threat ends, her husband leads her to bed where she falls into an exhausted slumber. The chapter ends there.The very next chapter starts with Pentandra arriving at the Alka Alon way point in a crypt and racing to the palace to coordinate the response to the goblin attack. This repeats the events in the previous chapter. Worse, the events are described a little differently. We end up with two chapters describing the same events from the perspective of the same character but things happen slightly differently. And no, this does not appear to be some kind of time travel paradox or alternate universe.The entire book reads as if the author had written different portions of it over long periods of time without re-reading what he had previously written to refresh his recollection. From there, it appears as if the author decided to publish the book without bothering to proof read and correct errors. This is frustrating because this author is clearly capable of better and because the author is charging full price for the book.After reading the book, I went back to Amazon’s website and read some of the reviews that other readers had posted. Several other readers noted these same problems when they read the book in 2016. I purchased the ebook from Amazon on June 11, 2018. The author had obviously not bothered to correct the errors in the intervening time. It leads me to believe that the author isn’t very concerned with the quality of the books he is publishing. This book isn’t worth reading. It certainly isn’t worthy of the price the author is charging.
This is a decent entry in the Spellmonger series. I really enjoy the series and how the author gives entire books to the supporting characters. The protagonist, Pentandra, should be familiar to regular readers. Getting inside her head was fun. She is an interesting woman. The book suffers from a lack of an editor. There are numerous places with typos or pronouns that are incorrect. Sometimes the same background info is repeated verbatim. The usual self-publishing issues that pop up in this series. The thing that hurts this book is a lack of an antagonist. Pentandra is “the second most powerful mage†in the world of these stories, she needs a worthy opponent. It might be argued that the situation she is in is the true antagonist but that is a dodge. She is never really challenged by anyone in the book. That’s my main issue. I also wish the whole spanking scene hadn’t happened. It wasn’t needed and belittled a strong female character and lessened an interesting male character.I am looking forward to the continuation of the story. I’ve already bought the next book in the series. I just wish this one had been stronger.
Normally I'd just let it go, but this book is being called a draft! Please, please stop cutting and pasting huge blocks of text! It was to the point that at least three time I thought I'd messed up my kindle and hit the back arrow or something. I'd be reading, hit a patch of repetition and then think, wait, did I accidentally lose my place, back up and begin rereading a section? Nope, the text was the exact same! Try typing
