From Publishers Weekly
This slender volume—a place marker in Quinn's philosophical oeuvre about mankind's relationship to nature (including the trilogy Ishmael, The Story of B and My Ishmael)—is as slight as the winsome aphorism in its title. Two-thirds of the book is a lightly edited transcript of a rambling, three-day dialogue between Quinn and a fan who spent Thanksgiving 2005 weekend with him in his Houston home "to nail down the ideas she had explored in my books." For Quinn, a related goal was to answer the question, "How do you do what you do?" for himself. The result provides no startling insights for anyone familiar with the author's essential thinking, though it does occasionally depict Quinn as a cranky and condescending guru, as he challenges his visitor on such topics as world history, religion and God's compassion, abortion and capital punishment, and overpopulation. The essence of the q&a exercise boils down to challenging received wisdom, pulling back to look at the big picture and examining all assumptions. Two essays, one on whether humanity can save itself from environmental doom and one on animism as religion, add some much-needed heft. (Jan.) This book is essentially an edited transcript of conversations had between the author and someone who came seeking his process. It is, again, modeled on the Dialogues. It gives great insight into many things about the author and his process, filling in the blanks with some context and, more importantly, serving as a handbook to allow you to learn how to see the world (and hear/identify Mother Culture's whisperings) for yourself.Said another way, this book provides insight on just how the author came by his perspective on the world that allowed him to write Ishmael, Story of B, After Dachau, etc. Better yet, it teaches how you can do the same in everyday life. It is something of a practical guide. If you want to move past having the obvious biases of our society pointed out to you and start seeing them for yourself then this is the book for you. You too can be a Martian Anthropologist!
Wow. I wish there was a clue to what we could do with this knowledge! A brilliant mind wrote this book. I am never quite sure if I'm glad I read a Quinn book or if like in The Matrix, I'd rather be rich and forget what I know.
The insights into Quinn's mind are instructive, awe generating, full of untold hope- discern able almost intuitively. What a great, productive read!At times humbling, other times empowering, If They Give You Lined Paper, Write Sideways never fails to impart a big change in our thinking process. We become part of the solution as soon as our thoughts are steered in a constructive way.
While I would agree that critical thinking is sorely lacking in our society and in our public schools' curricula, this book is unlikely to inspire you to think more critically. Read Ishmael: An Adventure of the Mind and Spirit or The Story of B instead.Quinn's interviewer in this book, Elaine, struggles to keep up with him as he leads her through his line of questioning. It was probably a very educational experience for her, but at times reading the transcript borders on tedium. Even Quinn seems to get frustrated a few times. There's a lot of redundancy as they often restate each other's questions and answers. The book never really goes anywhere. I didn't get much out of it.
I really enjoyed "Ishmael", "My Ishmael" and "The Story of B". But I found this more difficult reading. I still liked the way Quinn makes the reader look at history and life from a different aspect. Actually I left it with a bookmark near the end and will go back to it someday.
Daniel Quinn has many interesting and different ideas. However I feel most of his readers are after his explanation of Ishmael, while The Holy is my favorite book ever. I take comfort in the fact that one day squid will inherit the earth! Anyway, Quinn goes through questions and statements he receives from readers and discusses them with a girl, who wants to find out how Daniel Quinn does what he does. Sometimes it's frustrating, I wished it was a real live conversation and I could join in, but there is the internet, and I am sure I can. I did enjoy his going through and trying to teach, it's an interesting, rewarding, and frustrating process. It's always a challenge, thinking like someone else.
Thought provoking, although not quite on a par with the other books of his that I've read, still very worth the read.
Morris has just produced The Naked Man, a companion book to The Naked Woman, which appeared in 2004, and the latest in an evolutionary line stretching back to his career-defining, life-changing, collective-mentality-altering The Naked Ape, an instant bestseller when it was published in 1967 and now heading for sales of 20m. He has made a career out of telling us that 10,000 years of "civilisation" cannot offset several million years of hunter-gathering, and that we now live a life that is, in many ways, at odds with our genetic inheritance. The Naked Man exemplifies the tensions - and the pleasures - in Morris's richly varied career. The book is a long way from The Reproductive Behaviour of the Ten-Spined Stickleback, for which he was awarded his doctorate at Oxford in 1954. He could have had a distinguished career as what might be called an institutionalised zoologist - and for much of his time he has had exactly that - but in the late 1950s he fell among that dangerous tribe of television people, joining Granada to make the programme Zoo Time, which taught him how to popularise without dumbing down too much, made him a name and led to him writing The Naked Ape, which treated humans as animals and sought to explain all human behaviour in zoological terms. Man was not a moral or a spiritual being; he was an animal, an ape with pretensions to be something greater. "I spent the first half of my life studying animal behaviour," says Morris, "and when I eventually wrote a book about human beings, I wrote about them as if I was writing about another animal species. I had met Tom Maschler, then a young publisher at Cape, at a party and told him I was going to write a zoology of human beings one day, and not even use the term human beings. Instead I'd write it as if I was an alien who had come to this planet and seen this extraordinary ape which doesn't have any fur on its body. Tom loved the idea, but it took him three years to persuade me to write it, and when I eventually set to work I had to complete it in four weeks because I was so busy. I just sat down and wrote. It was written with such intensity that I can remember it to this day."Sound Familiar ? . I give 4 stars for his Appedixes . Otherwise , just okey, more of the same .
