Love, love, love this product. So beautifully laid out. High quality material. Gorgeous glossy pages with easy to follow instructions on pronunciation, etc. Practicing with this book and CD helps tremendously to acquire correct pronunciation and learning the pinyin alphabet and writing correctly the Chinese characters. This is a very challenging language to master--speech and writing--but it's worth the expenditure of energy and passion to learn Mandarin Chinese. Love the people and their culture. My greatest desire is to communicate intelligently with the many beautiful Chinese people here in the US. That will take a lot of practice, practice and more practice. But you know what, it's absolutely worth it!!!!!!!!!!!!
This book looks really great, with useful information about pronunciation, colorful layout, and instruction on writing. However, it's hard for me to access all of the material, because the interactive part (i.e. the CD-ROM) is PC-only and I have a Mac. After popping the first disc in and hearing my laptop chugging and making funny sounds, I saw on the back cover that it's PC only. Only the MP3s were available once my computer could finally show the disc. No access to the interactive stuff. I'm disappointed that Amazon didn't display this information clearly in the description!
Great, easy to follow beginners book. It also has sections where it outlines the differences between taiwanese Chinese and Mainland chinese! Only downside is the cd doesn't seem to work in Macs.
This book and CD are a great way for beginners to learn basic conversational Mandarin Chinese. The pictures and videos make the language easy to understand.

I like this book for learning the language. I am using it in conjunction with a few other books. The only reason this book received 3 stars is because I have so far found that CDR1-U1-E and CDR1-U5-E are both missing from the CD. Theses are the exercises that have audio so it makes it more difficult. You can make it though some of the exercises with out the audio file but I had to skip a couple sections. I am hoping the 2nd CD does not have this problem as well.

I know there are many Chinese language books, but I picked this one for my student. I like it because the content is very close to real life and not too overwhelming for beginners.
