Very good book for learning about Hokusai's Mt. Fuji prints. I just returned from visiting Japan and seeing Hokusai's work in the Hokusai Museum in Tokyo. They offered lots of books on Hokusai, but nothing with much English commentary. This book contains all the illustrations of both the "36 Views of Mt. Fuji" (actually 42, and the editor explains why 36 was used) which were printed in color in the early 1930's and the "100 Views of Mt. Fuji" (102 prints) which were later printed in black and white in a series of three books. Both of these collections were by a prolific artist in his 70s. These are as much a portrait of village life in 19th Century Japan as an homage to an iconic landmark. The editor includes notes on each print which explain legends associated with the figures, where the view is from, what the people are doing (going on pilgrimage, carrying mail, making barrels, etc.) and the significance of the animals and plants depicted. There are three reasons I didn't give this book 5 stars. First, the quality of the images is not of the highest caliber. Second, some of the black-and-white prints are reversed. (This is evident as the editor's notes refer to "left" and "right" and the printed picture's composition is opposite. I know the correct position of some as I took photos of the works in the museum.) Third, the color prints are much too green. (Again, I can compare with photos from the museum.)
