I have lived in Ecuador for 15 months now. I've traveled to many of the places mentioned in this book either by car or bus, and the recommendations for attractions, foods, and "survival" tips are accurate and informative. Knowing how to navigate Ecuador is important. It isn't like traveling in the US where I'm from. I believe the insights Jessamyn provides in her book are invaluable for having a really great experience visiting this pretty awesome country. Buena suerte amigos!
Apparently this book only comes in a large-print edition. If it were printed in normal type, it would probably be 30-40 pages instead of 130 -- and still covered at the beginning of any normal guidebook. In the author's response to another negative review, she said, essentially, that it was never meant to replace a guidebook. And that a normal guidebook is hard to keep up to date because it lists restaurants and lodging places. (None of that for her!) Yup, that's why we pay for real guidebooks -- they require effort. And it's not a travelogue either -- very few personal experiences are related. I think the author had a good intention of expressing her love for the place she's adopted as home, but I read this in about an hour and would be happy to have my hour and my $10 back. Save your money for a real guidebook or two.
I live in Ecuador and have traveled the country extensively. This book has spot-on information and up to date references. Everyone who is considering a trip to Ecuador should read it. Simple, to the point, and includes tips that only insiders would know. Great road arrangements as well.
I have relatives in Ecuador and both my parents are from there. I found this book to be a great quick read, yet full of useful insight for the first time traveler to the country. I would highly recommend this book to any potential traveler to Ecuador - its well balance and to the point. Kudos to the author. Would love to see a follow up book with more details on Cuenca and the American Ex-pat population.
I have been to Ecuador several times while searching for the place that I want to live. I learned on my own many of the points that Jessamyn touches upon in her book. I highly recommend it to anyone planning on visiting Ecuador. I wish that she would have released this before my first trip....it would have made navigating the country so much easier!
Good and Quick overview of country and culture. One of many books I have read on Ecuador as my wife and I prepare to move to Ecuador next month. There are several items mentioned that were new to me and made the book a good value. You must remember that is a quick overview so if you are expecting great detail on certain towns or culture you need to look elsewhere.
This book makes me want to pack bag a bag and go! Everything I would want to know to plan a trip! I appreciate the personal experiences and favorites, the "locals" inside scoop! A MUST read for anyone who likes to travel! Great tips!
