In this fifth volume of Karon's popular series (Out to Canaan, etc.) set in the quaint North Carolina town of Mitford, where people chuckle and say "dadgummit," Father Timothy Kavanagh is leaving town for a post-retirement interim appointment at a small island parish off the coast of North Carolina. After what seems (even to the minister and his wife) to be an endless round of good-byes, he and his wife, Cynthia, set off in a brand-new red convertible. Stormy weather, which closes in on them as they near Whitecap Island, presages the many struggles to come. Once on the island, Fr. Tim tries to befriend a seemingly hostile and isolated neighbor while he and Cynthia take over the care of a three-year-old boy whose mother is suffering from depression. Back in Mitford, meanwhile, Dooley, the mountain boy who is like a son to Fr. Tim, is thrown into jail, and the quiet woman who seemed the perfect tenant for the rectory house surprises the minister with a lawsuit. Additionally, an unexpected storm moves in off the ocean with devastating force. Karon adds a dash of suspense to her homey brew with the increasingly suspicious behavior of Fr. Tim's tenant, whose story emerges in a compelling confession. I grabbed Yasunari Kawabata's The Sound of the Mountain at the same time I picked up his Snow Country. I loved the latter so much, i dove right in to the former, and made sure I had all of his works in English on order immediately. Definitely talking crazed binge, here. The most magnificent new writer of my experience.The Sound of the Mountain is a troubled domestic drama told largely from the viewpoint of the declining patriarch, as he watches helplessly as his children flail and fail in their marriages. The meditative dialogue of such rich complexity as to evoke Ibsen or Chekhov. The personal drama is set against and amidst the narrative of nature, of climate and animal emotion and evolution. I've only ever experienced such synchronicity of human and innate nature in the works of Madison Smartt Bell.The absolute crystallization and distilled perfection of Kawabata's intuitively masterful prose is unsurpassed.A masterpiece.
My fourth time through the entire Mitford series and it never fails to delight! Tonight is Christmas Eve, and coincidentally or serendipitously, I just happened to finish this book which ends on Christmas Eve. “God’s timing is perfect.†Highly recommend to those seeking peace and simplicity in life.
I read the Mitford/Father Tim series by Jan Karon several years ago and enjoyed them very much. Now I'm listening to the books on CD during my drive home commute everyday. Hearing the stories aloud is a wonderful stress reducer. Its almost like meeting and catching up with news of old friends. Every character's story has challenges but with Father Tim's never failing faith and perseverance everything always works out for the best.
I struggled getting into the first book, but every one since has just been like going home to see family. I love reading the stories of Fr. Tim, Cynthia, Dooley, and all of the wonderfully amazing citizens of Mitford. It just feels like the perfect little down that everyone would love to be a part of. I can’t wait to read the next one!
I love all of Jan Karon's Mitford series. I'll be sad if she doesn't keep writing about these charming characters and their quaint lives. I especially love Father Tim and Cynthia and their Christian love. The Bible verses and the quoting of the liturgies are so familiar to me and it's refreshing to read these pages with no sex or profanity, yet they are filled with true love. The guys at the Grill are so funny and sound like some folks I know!The only thing about this edition was that it was sent to my i pad; I'm sure it went to my kindle as well, but I hardly read from it anymore as I like the i pad better. I don't know what happened, but all throughout the book the numeral "1" appeared everywhere at the end of words in place of the letter that should have been there. Annoying after a while but I still loved the story. I don't know if it went out that way to other readers or not but it was strange!Great series, though-
I am reading the entire Mitford series and, oddly enough, this has become my favorite. I loved the new characters and the new setting, while maintaining close ties with Mitford. I loved the excitement and the wonderful, simple theology. I must say, however, that the Kindle version was VERY difficult to read. (I hope Amazon reads this. I want my money back!) The last letter of many of the words is replaced by the number "1" and followed by "...." It was extremely distracting and interrupted the flow of the book while I figured out what word belonged there. On some pages, this happened multiple times. Thank goodness Ms. Karon' s genius shone past this and, once again, she delivered a winner.
It has been a long time since a series not in the fantasy genre has captivated my attention and imagination the way Ms. Karon's Mitford series has. As a former resident of WNC, I find her firsthand insight to the people, the region and the atmosphere to be right on the mark. I love the fact that I could step out of my own doorstep and see each and every character in the series as my friends and neighbors. Well Done!In A New Song, Ms. Karon continues the great thread she has begun and the shift of Fr. Tim and Cynthia to Whitecap from Mitford only adds fresh vitality to this series. The characters are solid, the dialog very real and the book moves from the very serious to the sublime. *the deep sea fishing trip was so funny, I had to put the book aside and surrender to a laughing fit....thank you for that! *If you have enjoyed Mitford up to now, then by all means read A New Song. I fervently hope that Ms. Karon continues to bring us the news from Mitford for some time to come.
You have to listen to the series in order to enjoy them fully. This is a replacement for another audiobook of the same title we had lent to a friend who lent it to someone else and on until we decided just to replace it. Anyway, the stories are very enjoyable and the audio quality is still good. Our audiobook library now numbers well over a thousand. We listen to our audiobooks while traveling, working on the farm or orchard, or just loafing.
